Holy Sunday in Sorrento
When someone have a chance to visit Sorrento during the Palm Sunday in Sorrento would see a very curious spectacle: girls who take in hand dragees compositions that reproduce flowering branches and small trees and guys who carry olive branches hung linked by colored ribbons and little “caciocavallo” cheese .
These are the Palms, while in Italy go to bless olive twigs, in Sorrento there is a traditional bless of caciocavallo and dragees.
The tradition of blessing dragees has a mythical history: it is said that the Palm Sunday of 1551 were sighted the ships of the Saracens who were preparing to invade Sorrento, but a shipwreck did sink ships. A girl, only survivor, was brought to church.
She had with her a bag of dragees, which in Sorrento had never seen. She teached how to do the palms to tanks the women of the Church. Since then every Palm Sunday the girls bring to bless dragees.
Do not have a legendary history behind the tradition, instead of bringing a small caciocavallo bless, probably it is a tradition of peasants, which often led to bless the typical products of the earth.
