Caruso stayed in Sorrento in 1921, where he spent his last quiet days before passing away at the hotel Vesuvio in Naples few days later, on the 2nd of August 1921. The rumors say that popular Caruso fell in love with a girl from Sorrento to which he gave voice lessons, and in a hot summer evening he devoted to her a romance that enchanted even the fishermen who rushed en masse to hear the sad song beneath the terrace of Hotel Excelsior Victoria where Caruso stayed.
Caruso has inspired many artists and singers, including the singer-songwriter Lucio Dalla, who in the suite which hosted Caruso composed one of his best songs: "Caruso", to be more precise.
The town of Sorrento has therefore decided to dedicate an award to the great tenor to those artists who have contributed with their art to spread Italian culture and art in the world.
